BMR vs TDEE: What’s the Difference?

BMR and TDEE answer different questions
Basal metabolic rate (BMR) estimates the energy your body would use at rest to keep essential processes running. Total daily energy expenditure (TDEE) expands that estimate to include movement, structured exercise, and the energy used to process food.
In practical terms, BMR is the foundation of the calculation. TDEE is the number normally used as a starting point for maintenance calories because it tries to represent an entire day rather than complete rest.

The baseline
How BMR is estimated
Directly measuring resting energy expenditure requires specialized equipment. Online tools therefore use predictive equations based on variables such as weight, height, age, and sex. The Mifflin–St Jeor equations were derived from measurements in 498 adults and remain a common starting point for general estimates.

Although people commonly say “BMR calculator,” many consumer tools are functionally estimating resting energy expenditure. The two concepts are close, but true basal measurements require stricter laboratory conditions than ordinary resting measurements.

How TDEE is estimated
A common shortcut multiplies estimated BMR by an activity factor. The factor bundles many changing behaviors into one category, which makes it convenient but also makes it the least precise part of the calculation.

Should you use BMR or TDEE?
Use BMR when you want to understand the estimated baseline beneath your daily energy needs. Use TDEE when you need a starting point for maintaining, losing, or gaining weight. Avoid treating BMR as a recommended calorie target: it excludes normal daily movement and other energy costs.
For planning, start with the TDEE calculator, keep inputs consistent, and compare the estimate with two to four weeks of observations. Short-term scale changes can reflect water, sodium, carbohydrate intake, and digestive contents rather than tissue change.
Where the estimate can go wrong
Predictive equations describe averages. Individual error can come from body composition, health conditions, medication, growth, pregnancy, adaptive changes during dieting, and inaccurate activity classification.
Wearable calorie estimates are not automatically ground truth either. The most useful approach is to treat every number as a starting estimate and update it when consistent real-world evidence points elsewhere.
