How to Photograph Stars Without Star Trails

Use a wide lens, short exposure, wide aperture, and high ISO to keep stars round. See starting shutter speeds by focal length and how to fix tiny trails.

Use a short exposure and check whether the stars are round

For a simple first attempt, put a 14–20mm lens on a full-frame camera and start at 10–15 seconds, f/2.8, and ISO 3200. Use a tripod, turn off flash, shoot RAW, and focus manually on a magnified bright star. On APS-C, a 10–13mm lens gives a similar wide view; start around 8–12 seconds.

Take one frame, enlarge a star near the edge or corner to 100%, and look for an oval or short line. If the star is stretched, shorten the exposure. If it is round but the sky is dark, raise ISO or use a wider aperture rather than making the exposure longer.

A longer lens magnifies both the stars and their apparent movement, so it needs a shorter exposure. A wide lens is easier for a first night-sky photograph because it captures more sky and allows more time to gather light before small trails become obvious.

Is the 500 rule accurate enough?

The 500 rule gives a rough maximum exposure by dividing 500 by the full-frame-equivalent focal length. It is easy to remember, but it can produce visible trails on a high-resolution camera or when the image is viewed large. Use it to understand the relationship—not as proof that the result will be trail-free.

Traditional 500-rule estimate

seconds = 500 ÷ (focal length × crop factor)

With a 20mm lens on full frame, the estimate is 25 seconds. A more conservative first frame might be 10–15 seconds, followed by a 100% check. With a 16mm lens on a 1.5× APS-C camera, use 24mm in the formula.

Stars also appear to move at different rates across the sky. If a precise night-sky composition matters, shorten the calculated time and test the actual part of the sky you are photographing. The cost of a shorter exposure is less light, which you can partly recover with aperture and ISO.

How do you focus on stars in the dark?

  1. Switch the lens to manual focus. Autofocus often hunts when the sky has too little contrast.
  2. Use live view and find a bright star or distant light. Magnify it as far as the camera allows.
  3. Turn the focus ring slowly. Stop where the bright point looks smallest and most defined, not largest or brightest.
  4. Take a test frame. Review stars near the center and corners. Refocus if they are uniformly soft; edge stretching may instead come from the lens.
  5. Avoid touching the ring afterward. Check again if you zoom the lens or change temperature substantially.

How should you adjust aperture and ISO?

Open the aperture to f/2.8 or wider if the lens produces acceptable stars there. If the corners look badly smeared, try closing by one stop and raising ISO to compensate. Start near ISO 3200, then judge the histogram, sky brightness, and noise on your own camera. Very dark skies may need ISO 6400; moonlight or light pollution may need less.

Include a foreground only after the star exposure works. A nearby dark object may need light painting, a separate exposure, or a naturally brighter time such as blue hour. Watch the moon and nearby artificial light: both can hide faint stars, though a little moonlight may help reveal the landscape.
